How To Throw The Best 90s Halloween Party
Attention all party animals! Are you ready to take a trip back in time to the 90s with a spooky twist? This guide will show you how to throw the best 90s Halloween party ever!
We have everything you need to make this year’s festivities legendary, from rad tunes to nostalgic munchies and costumes directly from your favourite films. So put on your scrunchie and crank up that boombox because these spooky nights have just become a whole lot more fun.
Let us cross the gate of history and enter the domain of gnarly parties past… It’s time to go all out and rock All Hallow’s Eve like you’ve never done before!
The Music
Probably THE most important element of the party. If the music is rubbish, the atmosphere will be nothing short of shocking (and not in a good way!). Being a 90s purist, I would initially recommend getting out your best party mixtapes from your collection – but who wants the music to stop?
If there are no DJs you can call upon, I would stick to a playlist curated by Apple Music or Spotify. The music should flow better, keeping a consistent atmosphere and tempo. For a party atmosphere, I would pick something like a 90s rock, metal (including Black or Death metal), club or trance playlist. Keep in mind your guests, what would they listen to?
Here are some playlist suggestions from Spotify:
Cocktails and Mocktails
There are plenty of Cocktail recipes out there on the net. But don’t feel like you have to buy the exact ingredients to make these.
Food colouring can turn your cocktails (or mocktails) into spookier versions. Mixing equal parts red, blue and green will make your spirits black if you do not already have black food colouring.

The Decorations
Back when I was a kid, Halloween decorations consisted of plastic blow-mould monstrosities which you could get from the local supermarket. I would get a whole bunch of these.
If you want that real clubby-retro vibe, invest in a UV bulb or two so that all the colours of the decorations and costumes will really pop! Make sure there is enough light so that people can see though. You don’t want a lawsuit on your hands.
Carve some pumpkins and illuminate them battery operated lights. If things are going to get a bit messy or rowdy, all to avoid your house getting burned down in the process.
The Dress Code
Get everyone to dress up! Here are some ideas if you want to encourage people to dress up for your party:
- Ghostface from the Scream movies
- The Ice Cream Man from Ice Cream Man (1995)
- Jack-O from JACK-O (1995)
- Power Rangers
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Michael Myers from Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
- Chucky
- Freddy Krueger from Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
Come on, it’s Halloween. You have to dress up.
Your Favourite Childhood Sweets
This is not a food blog. Although I would suggest having some kind of food available for your guests. But get some sweets in the mix too. You want this party to be a nostalgic experience right?
Here are some suggestions:
- Wham bars
- Refreshers
- Dip Dabs
- Drumstick Bars
- Jazzles
- Fruit Salads and Black Jacks
- Fizz Wiz Popping Candy
- Rainbow Drops
- Jawbreakers
- Sherbet Fountains
- Millions
- Parma Violets
- Flumps
Get your sugar rush on!
A Retro Game Station
Make an area away from the main dance floor, perhaps a quieter area of the house, where people can just chill and play nostalgic games. Dig out your old PS1 or N64 for those who just want to chill.
A friendly warning: keep your drink station away from this! You don’t want to wreck your console. Need spooky game suggestions? We got you covered.
Send Invites and Plan Ahead
For god’s sake plan it all in advance and let people know so they can cancel anything else life throws at them! If no one turns up it will be a total letdown.
Now go and have some spooky fun already! If you are looking for a more relaxed night in, check out our article on how to have a Halloween movie night.
