Looking back, the ’90s was a time of optimism, except for horror. The rise of the information superhighway made computer users feel like they were travelling to new lands from the comfort of their own homes. The capabilities of home video game consoles were skyrocketing. The rise of rave culture and music had people dancing in abandoned warehouses. The Cold War ended. The Hubble Space Telescope was launched. It was an exciting time!
Yet for horror, many doomsayers were declaring the death of the genre. But this was simply not the case. At least in the initial half of the decade, these people claimed that there was a notable decline in production value. Sequel bloat also did not do the genre any favours either. Yet, despite all this, the quality of horror, both literary and on the screen persisted.
Was the ’90s the worst decade for horror?
Because horror was not seen as the cash cow it once was in the ’80s, filmmakers had to get creative with not just the visual aspects of the genre, but its positioning on the market. Meta Horror classics such as the Scream franchise became self-deprecating, thus bordering on a comedy with horror elements. The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, could both be classed as either horrors or police investigation flicks in their own right. Were Jacob’s Ladder and Misery horror films, or dark psychological thrillers?
This is one of the reasons why often the ’90s were uncelebrated when it came to horror, being dubbed as the genre’s dark age. But just because horror had to ‘go dark’, does not mean at all that the darkness from the films was lacking. To prove this, here is a list of the 150 best horror films from the 1990s.
How was this list created? Using a bit of computer know-how, I scraped the scores from both IMDb and TOMATOMETER from Rotten Tomatoes, then calculated an “average rating” from the two scores. I then listed these in descending order (so the best movie will be at the top!). So go ahead, explore the list, and find your next go-to retro flick! Here are the very best 90s horror movies!
