The Blair Rabbit Project (1999 / 2021) Review

Pickings for Easter-themed horror from the ’90s is pretty slim. During our research for the blog, we came across The Blair Rabbit Project (2021) on Amazon Prime that was truly intriguing. A film originally recorded during the same year of the film it parodies back in 1999, but restored for 2021, available to watch over 20 years later!
The Blair Witch Project (1999) was a classic, but not without it’s flaws that deserve, playfully, to be poked at. Blair Rabbit‘s premise is pretty much the same as that of Blair Witch. Looking for the Blare Rabbit, a legendary mutant-rabbit monster, a group of amateur documentarians venture into the woods in search of evidence, only to be confronted by a mystery presence with a craving for human flesh. Okay, so the plot is marginally dumber than that of the original!
Either way, getting to unearth this absolute product of it’s time was way too irresistible. B-movie plot, DTV, and a parody of one of classic films of the decade. What’s not to like?
The Blair Rabbit Project Review
For the first third of the movie, Blair Rabbit felt a little tedious. I was getting ready to write this off as a dud, but I am so glad I didn’t! Things got so much funnier, especially during the movie’s climatic ending. The ending threw me off, and will probably be a surprise to you too. I would go so far as to say that it probably has the best ending to a movie I have seen in a while!
Expect goofy college kid humor throughout. There’s a lot of tripping over, horseplay – and so much screaming! As a parody, I feel that you cannot really call this a meta horror – but the comedy at times was very self aware. There’s plenty of jabs at the original too.
The second half of the film saved this film dramatically – it works as a comedic parody of a horror, but not at all as a horror in itself, but that does not take away from how enjoyable the film was.
