Trapped: Stuck in a Good Book

Fear Street Trapped cover

The final book in the original Fear Street series, Trapped (1997) has to be my favourite read from the series as a whole so far. This 51st instalment of the series is fast-paced, and whilst not gory as such, that is not to say that it is not graphic!

An urban legend tells of a group of teens in the 1960s that used to party in the tunnels beneath Shadyside High. But someone, or something, killed all of them. A group of teens are stuck in detention for the weekend. They are a motley crew of delinquents, except for one, Elaine, our main protagonist.

Even she gets caught up in the revelry of the group, who decide not to stay in the classroom and go exploring in search of snacks. But when they think they hear Mr. Savage is about to catch them, they decide to hide in a secret entrance to the tunnels.

It is not long until they find themselves trapped! Trapped in the endless tunnels where no one can hear you scream. What killed those kids from the 60s surely was just a story right? Or is there something very real in the tunnels out for blood?!

Summary

The graphic deaths in this book reminded me very much of the Hellraiser series. They are elaborate, almost theatrical, spectacles that leave nothing to the reader’s imagination. With the addition of large aggressive rats and the dark endless tunnels that offer no easy escape, this made for a very exciting read.

The beginning of this book may remind you of The Breakfast Club (1985). I has some similarities to the plot – later taking a much darker direction later. The ragtag cast of characters mostly had no endearing features, so it was not much of a loss when they were killed off. The character Bo I found especially irritating with his overt stupidity and wannabe macho-man attitude.

Despite the hateworthy cast, this book takes you on a journey you will find exciting. The ending is also particularly good!
